Workshop Brief

1. Draft Protocol for introducing Experimental Fisheries:
   At present Seychelles does not have a formal protocol in place for new and emerging fisheries. The workshop will be used to present a draft protocol which is aimed to serve as a framework for new and emerging fisheries. The idea is to debate the structure which can be adjusted according to expert input from key stakeholders. The protocol is designed to be as concise as possible to facilitate input and advice.
2. Introduction of an Experimental Fishery:
   Two potential resources have been selected to be considered for an experimental fishery: squid and prawns. To evaluate the implementation of such a fishery Steps 1 (Information gathering) and Step 2a (Scientific survey) of the proposed experimental fisheries protocol for the Seychelles will be presented, and advice on the next steps discussed.These include duration, area, number of vessels/licences, vessel types, gear, etc.; experimental design — objectives, methods of data collection, anticipated statistical analyses; management measures; performance indicators; and administrative processes — application process, notification, monitoring and analysis process and costs, compliance, penalties, review and amendment procedures.
